It seems every year, you hear more and more people saying how much they dislike the commercialism and over the top decorating that seems to go hand in hand with the holidays. Well, I’m hear to tell you that it does NOT have to be that way.
I LOVE Christmas. It’s my favourite holiday hands down. As much as I love to decorate, I use a light hand when decorating our home for the holidays. I do not jump on the yearly trend bandwagon when it comes to my Christmas decorating. Rather, I like to keep it simple and uncluttered.
Here are my tips to achieving a simple uncluttered Christmas.
1. Use what you have.
2. Create spaces that are cozy and restful.
3. Your decorations should compliment your home’s decor, not compete with it.
I like to use greenery, wood, paper, twine, burlap and lights to decorate my home. Since my home’s colour scheme is mostly whites and greys, I inject pops of red throughout for a pop of colour. This compliments what is going on throughout the year and pairs nicely with the turquoise that I like to use in my home.
With the exception of my tree, here is what I have done for the holidays this year. (Since we use a real tree, I do not like to put it up before the 15th.)
On the outside, we placed lights on the trees and our rail fence. On the house itself, I adorned the windows with wreaths and simple red ribbon.
Our front hallway which we do not use to enter the house but, it is one of my favourite spaces in our home.
From the front hallway, you can enter our home office/classroom.
Or you can enter our den where we have our wood stove.
From there, you enter our living room.
Then on to the kitchen we go.
In the mudroom, since it’s such a small space, I hung some prints courtesy of akadesign.ca
From there, you can head out to our back deck.
There you go, simple, uncluttered and what I like the best is I can leave some of these things out long after the holidays. For me that is the most depressing part. We go all out decking the halls to take it all down and pack it away for another year.
I decorated the house this year and spent $0.00 on any of the decor. The house is not cluttered but, still festive. For us, the week of Christmas especially is being together at home relaxing.
